Austin Peay State University (APSU) is considered as the fastest growing university in the state of Tennessee. Founded in 1972 as a two-year junior college and an institution that trained teachers, APSU is now a public, master’s level university that offers four-year courses. APSU’s main campus is in downtown Clarksville, approximately 25 minutes from Fort Campbell and just 45 minutes from Nashville. The university has two other campuses: The Austin Peay Center @ Fort Campbell (Fort Campbell, KY) and Highland Crest (Springfield, TN).

Centers of Excellence

Austin Peay State University features two Centers of Excellence - the Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts and the Center of Excellence for Field Biology.

The Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts program allows students to have an exceptional understanding and familiarity in creative writing, visual art, music and theatre. The program offers unique experiences that will help students in facing the workplace environment or graduate school.

The Center of Excellence for Field Biology lets students to conduct research in the natural laboratory in Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area giving them opportunity to carry out hands-on bio-diversity explorations.

No. 1 ROTC Program

If you aspire to be in the military, Austin Peay State University has Army ROTC program with incomparable training opportunities including use of multi-million dollar simulation facilities, practical or hands-on experience with Army equipment and the Army Air Assault School. The university was given Five MacArthur Awards for the programs that have been making the highest quality officers in the nation each year. Since 2010, APSU’s ROTC program has boasted top cadets in Leader Development and Assessment Course (LDAC) training. In LDAC training 2014, three APSU students were recognized as outstanding ROTC cadets. APSU was also ranked number 1 ROTC in the nation in 2013’s LDAC training.

How is Peay pronounced and who was Austin Peay?

It is pronounced like the word pea or the letter P. In 1972 when the university was established, Governor Austin Peay, who was serving his third term of office, signed a law creating Austin Peay Normal School, the reason why the “Governors” is the APSU’s mascot.
